  What's the Dirt Derby?

  How does it work?

How does it work? Every Tuesday night, folks from across central Texas get together to ride and race in a friendly, social environment. Once you show up at ADVMX Park, swing by the registration table next to the start/finish tower - its the place with the music playing. We ask that EVERYONE signs a waiver. We'll get you a number, answer all your questions and point you in the right direction. Save Time! Print out your registration form at home - click on "Downloads" Races are divided by ability, and run from 20 to 30 minutes, with each lap taking about 4-6 minutes (the expert and open 'cross courses will be longer than last season), making this a great event for your family and friends to come out and watch. Men and women start together but are scored seperately and get equal prizes

  What are the races like?

What are the races like? Short Track racing consists of riding on a short, wide-open race course, with lots of room to pass. Our track consists of packed dirt and clay, making it fast and forgiving. There are a few small hills, one steep descent, some pump track rhythm sections, and some big bermed turns, but no jumps or other stunts. While the track is great for beginners, its challenging enough for expert riders and does not favor skinny tires. Cyclocross racing is all about transitions. Traditionally raced on modified road bikes, a big part of the sport is jumping off the bike and running over obstacles. We feature regulation barriers, run-ups, sand, hard pack, and occassionally mud. Some of the nation's best 'cross racers have called our track one of their favorites. The Novice Race is a combined event for both beginner MTB and 'cross racers, who are scored seperately. This season we will split the course to provide the 'cross racers with a double barrier. The Cyclocross Open race is run in the opposite direction of the other races. There are 3-4 dismounts, including regulation barriers and a run-up.

What kind of bike do I need?

What kind of bike do I need? All races will be open to all types of bikes. We've had several people use normal road bikes with 30c tires. So if you want to run a 'cross bike in the Sport Short Track race, or a freeride bike in the 'cross race, go nuts. We only ask that you remove your bar ends for your competitor's safety.

What if I just want to ride?

What if I just want to ride? This is a great place to get in some after-work riding while its too dark to ride anywhere else, as well as to scope out what racing is like. Beginning at 5:15, you will be able to explore all of the ADVMX Park tracks, with our race course fully marked by 5:30. There is no charge, but you will need to sign a waiver as soon as you arrive. Once racing begins, we will ask you to stay in the areas not included in the race course, until it re-opens during the 15 minute warm-up periods between races, and again following the last event. There are 6-8 miles of fast swoopy singletrack at ADVMX we hope to make available later in the season as the days get longer.

  What if I win?

What if I win? Even though our focus is on fun, grassroots, casual racing, we know its always nice to have a little token for your efforts. We will again be offering end-of-season prizes, thanks to our sponsors

  How long is the season?

How long is the season? Currently, the season is scheduled to run nine weeks until March 6 - the last Tuesday prior to daylight saving time. However, we are strongly considering going 16 weeks through the first week of May, doing 'cross awards the end of February, then changing the schedule for the next 8 weeks. We are considering making the short track races longer, or including a duathlon, or adding divisions for Clydesdales, women-only, long-travel bikes, first timers, or whatever else YOU want.

  What does it cost?

  What if it rains?

What if it rains? ABVMX does not drain very well, and the soil turns into an impassible muck once its saturated - you physically can not make a bike (or car for that matter) move through the stuff. If we have to cancel, its will be on the scrolling message at the top of the home page, we post on TMBRA, TXBRA, and Bike Mojo - Austin Voodoo, and we email the 300 or so of you for whom we have functioning email addresses.
